Short Blog 7 — Comment on Agnes Szeto’s Long Blog 2

Hi Agnes, I really like how you used the photo from the City of Toronto Archives to explain the evolution of the Chinatown community in Toronto. It’s interesting to view the establishment of Chinatowns at different times with different social climates.

Seeing the photo of Downtown Chinatown allowed me to remember the times I would go there with my family during the pre-Covid times. I specifically remember being astonished of how everything seemed so authentic. I was able to notice the differences in authentic Chinese dishes and the ‘Americanized’ Chinese dishes. I really miss going there and hope to be able to go soon in the future!

A question that I have is regarding the gang violence in Chinatown — you mentioned that it is rather non-existent today. How did that occur? Did specific regulations take place? I would love to read more about the history of Chinatown in your future posts!
